Yet again, the Media have misinterpreted the Government’s plans regarding Wood Burning Stoves! They are not being banned. What the Government, and the stove industry wants, is to reduce old, inefficient open-fireplaces and old, inefficient wood burning stoves. They also want to stop the selling of traditional coal [not smokeless coal] and damp wood.

They want customers to purchase the latest DEFRA (strict on emissions) and Ecodesign-Ready (even stricter on emissions) stoves and to burn dry/seasoned wood only.

You may have read that the Government was intending to ban Wood Burning stoves. - THIS IS NOT TRUE!! THERE IS NO BAN ON WOOD BURNING STOVES

​HETAS have advised that while they are keen to encourage consumers to switch to cleaner wood burning, which will directly benefit them in their homes and improve the local environment, the government is not considering banning domestic burning.

Many households have installed wood - burning stoves, and they are not seeking to prevent their use or installation.

The Government along with the Industry is trying to educate households in using the correct wood/fuels for their woodburning stoves to reduce omissions and to stop people using open fires, specifically within smoke control areas throughout London, the South East and beyond.

​For the majority of burners that we install, they are within a smoke control area and must have a DEFRA approved stove to be fitted. DEFRA approved stoves already provide cleaner combustion than open fires or non-DEFRA stoves.

The Government, HETAS and the entire industry are already working to raise consumer awareness of the benefits of cleaner fuels, such as the Woodsure Ready to Burn initiative, where a logo clearly identifies wood that is certified as clean and ready to burn.

You will have also read about new regulations for 2022. In 2022 ECODESIGN STOVES will come into force, although some stove manufacturers are already prepared and are selling ECODESIGN stoves. Others will no doubt over the coming months/years adapt existing stove models to comply with the regulations. ECO stoves will follow on from DEFRA stoves – basically much cleaner combustion and
even more efficient.

It is very important to note that any stove purchased or installed before 2022 when ECODESIGN stoves come into full effect will still be fine to use. After this date only ECODESIGN stoves will be available to purchase.

​So to sum up, there is NO BAN on Woodburning Stoves so you can still enjoy being cosy and warm at home.

British weather can be spontaneous and unpredictable, so it makes life easier having a heating system which is easy and reliable. A wood burning stove can make your home warm and cosy quicker than you may realise. There are so many benefits to having a wood burning stove which are outlined below.

• Fuel is cheap

One of the most expensive ways to heat your home is via electricity. With the rising cost of gas and electricity suppliers, customers are looking for cheaper alternate ways to heat their homes. One of the most expensive gasses is propane. For example, an open fireplace does not heat very efficiently as it sucks in a lot of oxygen and the heat that is produced is quickly lost up the chimney. This means only a small section around the fireplace feels warm while the rest of the house remains cold, therefore more fuel is being burnt in order to produce adequate heat. Another benefit of the wood burning stove is that it continues to produce heat, many hours after it has been extinguished.
 

• Wood is a Renewable Resource .

Logs of wood are a renewable fuel source. Providing that you have bought your wood from a reputable source and have checked that your are burning the correct type of wood, burning it can be very Carbon Neutral. There is a variety of wood available nowadays which are purified and contain very little moisture content. This means the emissions that the wood produces, are not harmful to the environment. Chopped wood is also continuing the natural cycle for our environment. For every tree that is cut down to make firewood, it is replaced by at least one seed for another tree to grow. This cycle makes wood a completely renewable energy resource and you can have a clearer conscience about the environment.
 

• Easy to maintain

Wood burning stoves are quite simple and easy to maintain. As long as you take some basic required steps to keep it efficient and safe, you will have very little   problems with it. It is advised that you have your chimney cleaned at least once a year to eliminate dirt and blockages. Another vital step to keep your log burner safe and working efficiently is make sure you use the correct type of wood, free of moisture and regularly clean the ash from the pan. If these steps are followed, then there will be very little maintenance and problems with your stove.
